Directors can now keep home addresses private
Home addresses of directors and company secretaries need no longer be available for public record following a new law implemented under the Companies Act 2006.
Until now the home addresses of directors and company secretaries had to be filed with the Registrar of Companies and only those who could satisfy the Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills that they or their family were at serious risk of violence or intimidation if their addresses were made public could be granted a Confidentiality Order.
Under the new system a service address can be used for public record and a home address will be included on a secure register, which can only be accessed by certain public authorities and credit reference agencies. Alison Barr, a commercial law expert and Partner at Barr Ellison comments: “This is very good news for directors of companies that are likely to be a target of particular groups or individuals. Any Confidentiality Orders already in place will remain.”
