Door stepping stopped - NEARLY

In a seemingly uncharacteristic move, the EU has produced a piece of legislation that appears to conform to most people’s definition of common sense.

The legislation is called The Cancellation of Contracts made in a Customer’s Home or Place of Work etc Regulations and came into force on 1st October 2008.

If a consumer invites a salesperson into their home to discuss, for example a new patio, driveway or conservatory and finds themselves signing on the dotted line, new legislation gives them seven days to ‘cool off’ and cancel the contract.

In addition, the sellers must inform the customer that they have that right and it must be prominently displayed in any contract document.

The regulations cover any purchase of over £35.00 and sellers face a hefty fine of up to £5,000 if they omit to mention the cooling off period or leave it off their contracts.
