Is employee absence giving you a headache?

1st February was officially National Sickie Day, so called because this is the day when staff are most likely to call in sick for work in preference for a day under the duvet.  The excitement of Christmas seems far behind us now and the cold, dark days of February loom ahead.  For those of us not lucky enough to be sunning ourselves in far off parts, it seems that the pressures of work can be too great.

Light-hearted banter aside, managing absence is a minefield for businesses, particularly small to medium-sized employers without a dedicated HR function.  A recent survey shows that, whilst the recession has had a positive effect on absence levels, employees are still absent for more than 7 working days every year on average.

Absence is an expensive drain on resources for employers.  Caroline Banwell, a specialist employment solicitor at Barr Ellison Solicitors, ran an interactive Absence Management Workshop on Wednesday morning 24 March 2010.  The workshop was designed to provide managers and employers with the management tools necessary to reduce absence and increase productivity within your business.
