Barr Ellison - making life go your way

Charity legal services

Local Cambridgeshire charities are a core element of Barr Ellison’s client base.  For decades we have worked with local charities, dealing with their ongoing day-to-day commercial, employment, property and litigation requirements as well as one-off transactions such as formation and mergers & acquisitions.

The regulatory regime for charities is in the throes of change.  The new rules aim to simplify and reduce the regulatory burden and to make it easier for charities to achieve their ultimate goal: to provide the best possible service to their target group, whether that be aiding children or the elderly, or providing assistance to the needy or opportunity through education.  Barr Ellison Solicitors firmly believe that the new regulatory structure will assist charities, but we also recognize that change brings its own uncertainty and stresses and we are here to work with our clients through this time of change.

We provide an advisory role for Trustees, Directors and Managers of charities and our areas of expertise include:

  • Formation of new charitable organizations
  • Creation of charitable and commercial subsidiaries to leverage the tax position of the charity
  • Formation and administration of charitable trusts
  • Changing the status of existing charities to Charitable Incorporated Organization to take advantage of a single regulatory regime
  • Constitutional and governance issues
  • Setting up joint operations with other charitable organizations
  • Restructuring, including mergers or acquisitions
  • Working with the Charity Commission and other regulators
  • Day-to-day commercial operations
  • Employment matters
  • Property matters
  • Dispute resolution, mediation and litigation

Barr Ellison Solicitors is a member of the Charity Law Association.  A number of the firm’s Partners participate as trustees or members of a range of local charities, assisting them in their day-to-day activities.
